On August 25, 2005 after several months of negotiation that started at the beginning of 2004, the Dominican Republic officially entered to the Free Trade Agreement that the United States have been negotiating with 5 Central American States (El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica and Guatemala).

Regarding free trade tradition, the Dominican Republic is already a member of the World Trade Organization since 1995. In 1998, in order to help with the regional integration, the Dominican Republic became member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) view webpage (www.wto.org).

In another vein, the Dominican Republic has had a close relation with the European Union through several agreements , specially the Cotonou Convention which is in force since February 3, 2000.

For a less traumatic implementation of the DR CAFTA, the Dominican Republic will have to implement also several Laws and complementary procedures that will ease this transition moment.

Considering the previously mentioned background and having identified one of the main needs within the present context that is that the Agreement has already been ratified by the United States Government and the Dominican Congress, the question that arises is which are the perspectives of the Dominican Republic as a signatory State of the DR-CAFTA.

In order to answer this question we will have to examine the two cornerstones of any free trade agreement. We will start talking about trade perspectives (I) to continue analyzing the investment expectations (II).
