CENTRAL LAW attends Legal Summit of the Americas 2015 in New York

The 2015 Legal Summit of the Americas will be held in New York City next December 3-4, 2015 and is organized by the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, on behalf of the New York City Bar Association counting with the Pro Bono Network of the Americas and the Tinker Foundation as sponsors.

The Summit will bring together leading lawyers from all areas of the profession in Latin America and the United States, including law firms, law schools, non-governmental organizations, and government. Speakers, panels, and working groups will consider collaboratively and pragmatically how the profession can advance democratic governance and open society in the Western Hemisphere.

The Summit follows on the 2005 summit that the Vance Center convened to launch the pro bono initiative that became the Pro Bono Declaration of the Americas, to which more than 500 legal organizations throughout the hemisphere have subscribed. On this basis, the Vance Center and Fundación Pro Bono Chile led the establishment of the Pro Bono Network of the Americas, now with member organizations in 13 countries.

Building on the success of the Pro Bono Declaration of the Americas, the Summit will identify specific objectives in furtherance of the lawyer’s fundamental obligation to serve the public interest and central role in maintaining the rule of law and open society. Participants will launch new initiatives to meet these objectives through ongoing collaboration.

CENTRAL LAW offices of Costa Rica and Honduras became one of the first signatories of the Pro Bono Declaration of the Americas (PBDA) in 2010, an initiative of the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice of the New York City Bar and other prominent law firms from Argentina, Brasil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, México, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela. In 2013 all the offices at the firm signed the PBDA.

Guadalupe Martinez Casas, Executive Director and pro bono coordinator at CENTRAL LAW will attend the Summit on behalf of the firm.
